What are making charges in gold jewellery?

Making charges are the labour and design fee a jeweller adds on top of the per-gram gold value. Calculated as either a flat per-gram rate (e.g. ₹250 to ₹800/g) or a percentage of gold value (8 to 25%). Branded stores (Tanishq, CaratLane) charge 12 to 18%. Local jewellers 8 to 12%. Designer pieces 18 to 30%.
