Karat vs fineness — what's the difference?
Both express how much pure gold is in an alloy. Karat uses 24 as the maximum (24K = 100% pure). Fineness uses 1000 as the maximum (999 = 99.9% pure). The two scales are equivalent — fineness is just karat × (1000/24) rounded.
BIS hallmark stamps in India use the fineness scale. So a 22-karat ring is stamped 916, an 18-karat diamond setting is stamped 750. The HUID code does not include the karat; it is a separate 6-digit serial that identifies the specific piece in the BIS database.
